LOO . .76 . .06 Official Paper for Morrow County Tomorrow's Election. MORE than the usual number of anxious candidates await the outcome of tomorrow's election and especially in the republican ranks are there contests for county offices the outcome of which will leave some good official timber un used. Fo the public good it is a healthful fact that good men have been drawn into the race to com pete against each other, though 't is discouraging to the good man to be beaten. The fact that the voters have the opportunity to choose good men to carry the party banners in the fall election, and the further fact that there are many important offices to be filled should cause the electorate to respond in a lively way at the polls. The election will determine the tenor of Oregon voters in two important ways. It will show to a degree how this state stands in se- lection of the next occupant of the White House, and it will further show how much of a political issue the Townsend plan has become in this state. The presidential issue will not be so clear cut with republicans and democrats each having but one candidate's name appearing for the high office. However, the temper of the people will be reflected to a degree in their choice of convention delegates and national committee men, and in their vote on snators and rpresentativs in congress. It is in the latter races, also, that the strength of Townsendism will be determined. It is the Townsend issue that has political prognosticators guessing as to the outcome of tomorrow's election. The only offices that is sue should affect, however, are the congressional offices. Other offices have nothing to do with enactment of the Townsend plan into law, and candidates for other offices who have sought votes through its en dorsement are readily marked as political opportunists. Just how much of it was done for political effect is not certain, but it is to be lamented that the WPA health agencies priwy project is being discontinued before all the offensive open toliets in the county have been effaced from the land scape. Not enough men available to carry on the project is given as the reason for discontinuance; but if the new style toilets will elimin ate flies and reduce disease, let's have more of them. Lively activity in the wool and sheep market here this week be speaks return of prosperity. Tou can believe the New Dealers who will take all the credit,, or agree with Colonel Knox who said in Port land this week that it is the result of natural causes just as you like. At any rate the average wool man still favors a strong protective tar iff. Heppner got rid of a lot of last winter's accumulation of tin cans yesterday. It could still do with some more water and less dust If you haven't been about town lately, it would do you good to take a stroll around. Some of the city's residences are set off by the most beautiful lawns and gardens seen in years. RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT. In memory of Brother N. M. Johnson, who died April 30, 1936. Once again death hath summon ed a Brother Odd Fellow, and the golden gateway to the Eternal City has opened to welcome him to his home. And whereas, the all-wise and merciful Master of the Universe has called our beloved and respect ed Brother home, and he having been a true and faithful member of our beloved order, therefore be it Resolved, that Lone Palm Lodge No. 82, L O. FARMERS' ATTORNEY WOULD BE DELEGATE I j ARTHUR M. GEARY Arthur M. Geary, Portland at torney, is one of the 17 candidates from the state at large for dele Kate to the republican national con vention. Four delegates are to be elected from the state at large. Geary, whose practice has been largely devoted to representation of farmrs and stockmen of the Mountain - Pacific Northwest In freight rate cases and investiga tions, writes, "It is important that national party conventions give fair and intelligent cossideratlon to the problems of the Pacific North west Our lumber and affiliated in dustries are facing unfair compe tition from Canadian mills. Low water rates in foreign ships and lower wages of paid labor give the Canadian competitors an unfair advantage. "Also our dairy, livestock and grain industries which are so im portant to Morrow county are faced with foreign competition and with a national policy that tend; to unjustly discriminate in favor of the middle west "If elected delegate to the repub lican national convention at Cleve land I hope that my experience in representing large groups of farm producers of this area will be help ful."
